| MAY 2003 NEWSLETTER | |
Hello everyone, and welcome to the MOCA Online Newsletter. In time we will fine tune the format of this monthly e-mailing but for now I ask that you pardon the format as I'm completely new to putting out a newsletter. I wanted to get "something" out to get the ball rolling so to speak and hopefully encourage all of you to send in your own news, competition results, memorials, stories and what-have-you, of Morgans and Part Morgans, both present and past. I'd love to hear about the Retiree's from the Morgan/Part Morgan Open Competition World, so let us hear from you. Send such news items, any and all, to me, MaryAnn Schafer, at: strmswpt@moranopencomp.org Please pass the word of our Association and Online Newsletter to any and all, and if you belong to any clubs, Morgan and Open, any and all, please ask them to publish word of the Morgan Open Competition Association (MOCA). I have a "press release" I can forward to any of you upon request. If you'd rather I notify such clubs, please just send me their contact info. Thank You, MaryAnn Schafer -------------- BLACK PRONG CDE Feb. 21 - 23, 2003 This CDE was hosted at the home of Morgan Owner and Carriage/CDE driver Alan Aulson and his wife Maureen. They graciously stepped up and created this CDE to fill the gap left by the cessation of the Basingstoke CDE. The Aulson's literally carved the sight of their home, and this wonderful CDE venue, out of the wilderness of what was for over a hundred years, a hunting preserve. What is even more amazing is that this top notch facility was created and finished in 9 months, from the originally planned 3 yrs, to make it possible to host this CDE. The Aulsons are wonderful hosts and true equestrains. Morgans Competiting:

-------------------------------------------------------------------- RAM TAP CDE Report: From: Nancy King Last week end my husband and I went to Fresno, Ca, for the CDE held each year at Ram Tap. We sold " Trotter Lane Coaltown" as most of you know in Dec. and his new owner has been getting him back in shape. This was her very first CDE and his first competition in a CDE since 1995. They looked great, the had no time penalties, no knock downs in the hazards, they were right in there up until the final check gate. Bev was so happy, talking to her "Gator" Joyce Williams, I think that is what she said she was doing, that she missed that gate and got the big "E" as they call it, or eliminated. Her cones class was very fast but they had three balls down. She used a different vehicle for cones and I think it takes a lot of time and practice to get working as a "team". Changing vehicles can change the way you have to line up with the obstacles. The horse was so steady. She just loves him and said it was so great to have a horse that she does not have to worry about spooking or acting silly so that she can concentrate on what she is trying to do. She felt any errors made where due to pilot error and she was thrilled with the horses performance. Lisa Zito, another Morgan owner was there for two days and she and I were able to sit together and have a nice visit. She just bred her Morgan mare to one of the stallions from the Farceur lines that Marjorie Hazelwood and her two daughters are breeding. Two years ago I helped a family find a Morgan mare for their 14 year old daughter. Katy Ball is her name and she was also at Ram Tap. I found a mare named Triton Shirley Ann for her who was at the Western States Expo with Susan Walker and Bob Morgan Jr. She was for sale, only four and green but I watched her for two hours with all the commotion and the way she acted towards kids and the crowd. I felt that the Balls would want to see her and give her a test ride, etc. They bought her and now Katy is having lots of fun showing her in carriage driving. Her mother is her navigator. We had to leave before I had a chance to get her final scores and times but she looked very nice from what I could see. For those of you who show in carriage, here is a great idea I got from this past weekend concerning safety helmets. One lady that was driving in the cones class that I watched had taken a broad brimmed hat, cut out the center and put it over her hard hat. She used some florist ribbon that had wire in it to make a center cover, also used a floral print scarf and some silk flowers to hide the top and sides of the hard hat. Honestly it really did look nice, kept the sun off her face and she tied it under her chin so that the wind could not blow the whole thing off her head. A very clever solution to the problem of something pretty vs. safety. -------------------------------------------------
APPLE BLOSSOM 25 May 3, 2003 From: Esther Fiddes Gallant Fireglo ( Chester) and LBF Hickory Smoke ( Pokey) completed the Apple Blossom 25 ECTRA sanctioned CTR in Groton, MA.yesterday, 5/3. Pokey got a 2nd place ribbon with a 96, and got the top Morgan award. Trusty dear Chester, at age 20, got a 95 and a third. We were using a new saddle pad which, while it worked for training, gave him a wicked rub, so 3 of the points he lost were for that. Our next ride will be the Northeast Morab in Leverett, MA on May 17th. ------------------------------------------------------- From: Mary Coleman MORGAN POWER IN MICHIGAN Hawk's Nest Tradition, the mighty Morgan Hawk, and ridden by Mary Coleman finished back to back 5 hour 50s and top tenned both days and received the best Morgan ribbons too. ----------------------------------------------------- LIVE OAK CAI CDE, April 20 - 23, 2003 Morgans Competiting:

MEMORIALS: YANKEE'S EXCALIBUR (The Yankee x Anna Marie Mar-Lo), aka "Junior" was foaled Feb. 2, 1973 and passed over the Rainbow Bridge on Jan. 8, 2003. He was the epitome of the Versatile Morgan. Gallent of heart, generous, willing and had a great sense of humor. He truly did it all and did it well. He is responsible for my involvement in Morgans and my steadfastness to Versatility and keeping it natural. Junior competed in every division offered during the '70's and '80's save for Park and Reining. He won extensively in In Hand, English Pleasure, Western Pleasure, Trail Class, Classic Pleasure (Driving & Saddle), Dressage, Plesure Driving, Obstacle Trail rides, Gymkhana, & Carriage. Between shows, he was the epitome of the pleasure trial horse and logged countless miles down countless trails, always eager to see what was around the next bend. He retired the PA Morgan Horse Club's Versatility Challenge Trophy and put "legs" on many trophies in the aforementioned divisions. Most of all, he was a great friend and teacher, to his lifelong owner Donna Lee-Brown and myself, as well as many, many others. His hoofprints will leave imprints on the hearts of all who knew him forever. MaryAnn Schafer
BAYWIND MR. FASHION Another great master of Versatility whom we hope to have a more indepth tribute on in our next newsletter, was "ROMPER". Anne Byrd ("Byrdie") Donaldson's was Romper's lifelong friend and partner. Romper was born on March 15, 1977, and passed over the Rainbow Bridge on April 19, 2003. He too did it well, did it all, and did it naturally. He was the foundation for Byrdie's Severn Hill Morgans in Annapolis, MD. MaryAnn Schafer
