DRESSAGE:

Judy Owens sent in news of the AMHA giving an award to the highest scoring Morgan at the Missouri Dressage Classic that was held July 11 - 13, 2003 in Columbia MO. I don't have the name of the recipient of that award, and apologize to Judy for not getting it into the June Newsletter as that "issue" had already been sent out. We look forward to announcing the Hi Score Dressage Morgan in the Sept.MOCA Newsletter.

Rocking Horse Morgans 3yr old Morgan filly, KC Sharmayne, (aka Mamie Sue), won her first Costume Class at their Club's Open Show on July 7th. Mamie Sue along with her owner and co-conspirator Kathy Firch, did the Hawaiian luau theme with a twist--a stuffed purple Alligator went along for the ride!

He was on Mamie's neck, between her ears, and when the judge called for her favorite gait, good ole Allygator was trotting alongside of her! Diane Conrady was the judge, and she was laughing so hard, she could barely judge the class!.

EVENTING:

Cynthia Bayles reports that after completing over 54 "recognized" AHSA/USCTA events - (most at Preliminary and 2 years at Intermediate - the only higher level being "Advanced", which is just 3 inches bigger and a bit faster) and also being the first Morgan to win the Gold Medallion in Eventing/Combined Training and winning the USCTA High Point Morgan 4 years in a row, Rebel (Roseridge Johnny Reb), is now retired from eventing. They're now doing Show Jumping again. Last week at the Brawley Farms show they won the Championship in the Adult Amateur 3'6" division and.............drum roll...........cleared 5 ft in the high jump!!! All 14.3 hands of him. Rebel has developed a new group of fans now at the jumper shows. He also did well at Hood River - 2nd in the derby again this year. And - did well at the Country Classic this weekend. Congrats to Cynthia and Rebel for showcasing the Morgan Jumper and Eventer!

COMBINED DRIVING:

The Attelage International held in Blainville, Quebec, June 20-22 saw several Morgans achieving yet more outstanding honors in the discipline of Combined Driving. In the FEI Advanced Pairs division, Mimi Thorington's Morgans, Avalon Avant Guard , LR Ami Bengali and Count On Me, driven by Lisa Singer, once again emerged victorious and continue to be a force to be reckoned with.

High Country Doc, a seven-year-old stallion owned and driven by Sara Schmitt of New Jersey finished a strong second in the FEI Single pony division.

SCHOLARSHIP:

MORGAN DRESSAGE SCHOLARSHIPS AVAILABLE

For the second year Morgan dressage enthusiasts can take advantage of eight $500. scholarships to be awarded by the Morgan Dressage Association. Recipients may use their awards for lessons, clinics, symposiums, or other educational endeavors. Applicants must be MDA members and must be competing in dressage on a registered Morgan horse. Scholarships are available for serious training/first level riders as well as those competing in the more advanced levels. The application deadline is Oct. 15, 2003.

Last year's scholarship recipients featured riders competing in Training through FEI levels and included Sally Anderson of Spokane, WA, who rides Iron Forge Starman; Annette Bakic of Binghamton, NY with Fortress Initial; Meg Drew of Black Forest, CO with Creation's Grand Finalee; Johanna Hugo of New Egypt, NJ with Wintop's Allen; Barbara Richardson-Lewis of Winsboro, TX with Rogue Hill Galaxy; Nancy Rebman of Ashland, OH with Magenta Sensational Topic; Beth Sheller of Franklin, TN with Caduceus Quintanna; and Jamie Smith of Bellville, OH, who rides Moss Rose Opening Verse.

The scholarship program is funded from the proceeds of a stallion service auction held by the MDA every January. Services to beautiful and talented Morgan stallions have been donated by their generous owners; the association offers the services at one-half the advertised fees.

Morgans are increasingly being seen as wonderful dressage mounts, especially suited by temperament, size and athleticism for juniors and serious amateur competitors.

Among other activities, MDA publishes an annual membership directory, recognizes excellence through year-end and open competition high- score awards, produces educational articles geared to helping dressage riders with their Morgans in the sport, generates favorable publicity about Morgan dressage mounts, sponsors educational activities around the United States, produces a quarterly newsletter and sponsors an e-mail discussion list.

For more information about the association and its activities and to download scholarship guidelines and application go to www.morgandressage.org or write Morgan Dressage Association, PO Box 207, Lovettsville, VA 20180.
