Hello! I'd like to welcome all our new members, thank all who have sent in results/news, as well as thanking everyone for their continued interest and support. Just so no one thinks they've been forgotten, there will not be an August 2003 Newsletter, as I'll be away the entire month. Please continue to send me all your news, results, etc., and the Newsletter will resume in September. Thanks to all who have sent me news and results, keep on sending them in, no matter how small or casual the event or competition may be, it's what we are all about: promoting and recognizing Morgans & PartMorgans in Open Competiton. ------------- DRESSAGE: Judy Owens sent in news of the AMHA giving an award to the highest scoring Morgan at the Missouri Dressage Classic that was held July 11 - 13, 2003 in Columbia MO. I don't have the name of the recipient of that award, and apologize to Judy for not getting it into the June Newsletter as that "issue" had already been sent out. We look forward to announcing the Hi Score Dressage Morgan in the Sept.MOCA Newsletter. ----------- Lisa Cannata and her Morab gelding, "Out Of The Blue", aka Miko earned their USDF Silver Medal in May of this year. Competiting at Prix St. Georges, they achieve the required scores of 60% or higher, including a win at that level and besting Warmbloods, to clinch their Medal. Congrats Lisa & Miko! --------------- Edie MacLeod, from Sterling Heights, MI has a beautiful Sabino Morgan gelding, SFG Wind In The Willow (aka Bud), that has started his Dressage career quite successfully. At the June 13 -15 USDF Summer Dressage at Willow Ridge, Bud was shown at First Level and competed in 2 classes each day, scoring well and earning a ribbon in every class, including: (2) 4th place ribbons, (3) 3rd place Ribbons and (1) 2nd place Ribbon. --------------- CUTTING: Out in California, Gerry Paiva is actively competing and promoting the Morgan Cutting horse with her homebred mare, Kizzy's Kitten. They have been competiting well at the club level, and are heading to Oregon this month for a NCHA Show. Good luck Gerry & Kitten! Waiting in the wings is her younger mare, Girlfriend who is sired by Primavera Valdez. ----------------- SHOW: Dawn Fire of Peeper Ranch's beautiful gelding, Accel I Got Rhythm (aka Charlie) has been taking on all comers at some pretty stiff A rated competitions, and beating all breeds, including Saddlebreds, in Open English Pleasure. Amongst Charlie's wins are:

Janine Hawkins and her daughter Emily have been competiting their homebred mare, Little Oaks First Lady (aka Boo) in multiple shows: SILVER SPURS 6-29-03 Youth Activity Showmanship (Emily) 3rd out of 10 English Horse In Hand (Emily) 4th out of 10 Walk Trot Eq. (Emily) 6th out of 9 Walk Trot Pleasure (Emily) 3rd out of 10 Open Driving (Janine) 1st (Second in this class was Little Oaks Romeo belonging to a friend of the Hawkins) out of 4 entries. --------------- RCA Morgans in Erie, CO hosted an open Hunter/Jumper show on July 6th and two beautiful buckskin mares, PKR Valdez's Galon de Oro (aka Juanita) and PKR Corazon de Oro (aka Mighty Mouse) traveled down from Berthoud CO. The "Golden Girls" as they are known, are daughters of Primavera Valdez and are owned by Bob & Carol Simpson, Prima Kosto Rancho in CA, and on lease to Laurie Prindle and Bill Cripe:
------------- Rocking Horse Morgans 3yr old Morgan filly, KC Sharmayne, (aka Mamie Sue), won her first Costume Class at their Club's Open Show on July 7th. Mamie Sue along with her owner and co-conspirator Kathy Firch, did the Hawaiian luau theme with a twist--a stuffed purple Alligator went along for the ride! He was on Mamie's neck, between her ears, and when the judge called for her favorite gait, good ole Allygator was trotting alongside of her! Diane Conrady was the judge, and she was laughing so hard, she could barely judge the class!. ------------- EVENTING: Cynthia Bayles reports that after completing over 54 "recognized" AHSA/USCTA events - (most at Preliminary and 2 years at Intermediate - the only higher level being "Advanced", which is just 3 inches bigger and a bit faster) and also being the first Morgan to win the Gold Medallion in Eventing/Combined Training and winning the USCTA High Point Morgan 4 years in a row, Rebel (Roseridge Johnny Reb), is now retired from eventing. They're now doing Show Jumping again. Last week at the Brawley Farms show they won the Championship in the Adult Amateur 3'6" division and.............drum roll...........cleared 5 ft in the high jump!!! All 14.3 hands of him. Rebel has developed a new group of fans now at the jumper shows. He also did well at Hood River - 2nd in the derby again this year. And - did well at the Country Classic this weekend. Congrats to Cynthia and Rebel for showcasing the Morgan Jumper and Eventer! ------------- COMBINED DRIVING: The Attelage International held in Blainville, Quebec, June 20-22 saw several Morgans achieving yet more outstanding honors in the discipline of Combined Driving. Fred Merriam, driving Nick Mercede's Gaitwood Lightwing, won the FEI Advanced Single Horse division. They also had the best Dressage score of all competitors in the event. In the FEI Advanced Pairs division, Mimi Thorington's Morgans, Avalon Avant Guard , LR Ami Bengali and Count On Me, driven by Lisa Singer, once again emerged victorious and continue to be a force to be reckoned with. High Country Doc, a seven-year-old stallion owned and driven by Sara Schmitt of New Jersey finished a strong second in the FEI Single pony division. Congrats to all these Drivers, Owners and Morgans! ------------------ TRAIL: Al McKinzie Allison and his buckskin Morgan mare, La Flora De Primavera, (Primavera Valdez x Broadacres Renee), recently competed in a Judged Trail ride sponsored by the 4H of Howard County MD, about 30 mile outside of Washington DC. In this their first competition, Al and "Rebra" won Best of Breed, and placed 3rd overall out of 50 horses entered in the ride! Way to go Al and Rebra! ------------- ENDURANCE: Connie Berto and her gelding Eco Stardust (Dusty) completed the Cold Springs XP rides covering 250 miles -- 50 miles each day, from June 9th through the 13th. The AERC endurance ride series is based out of the historic Cold Springs Station midway between Fallon and Austin, NV. Out of 92 horse-rider teams starting the ride on Day 1, only 18 five-day teams (same horse/rider) finished. Dusty was the only Morgan on the ride and completed the series of rides in excellent condition. Hats off to Connie and Dusty! On June 28th, Connie and Dusty completed the 50 Mile Oakland Hills AHA Reg. 3 Championship Endurance ride, in Oakland, CA. With only 49 horse/riders completing the ride out of 65 starters, they finished an outstanding 28th!
INTERNATIONAL NEWS: Rick & Joanne Hayes who own the Haymeron Park Morgan Stud in Victoria Australia, sent in news of their impressively versatile Morgan stallion, Karenza Apollo (Karenza Kingpin x Okan Missed Easter). With only 6 months under saddle he has proven that Morgan's are indeed a versatile horse to own. All in Open company
CALENDAR: JoAnne Anderson (morgans@indianheadtel.net) reports: July 26th and 27th there is the Blue Hills Morgan Combination Show held in Rice Lake Wisconsin at the Barron County Fairgrounds. There are Morgan Breeder Classes, WSCA ruled Open Classes of all breeds & 4-H classes for kids in a recognized 4-H club. On July 26th is the gaming day open to ALL breeds, rules are Western Saddle Club Association Rules. Judge is Tamara Jacobsen, Judges decision is FINAL. There are 36 classes this day and there is a high point gaming trophy at the end of Saturday only. NO classes will carry over into Sunday Highpoints The only way your gaming points will count is if you are going for the High Point show horse ONLY. So if you are make sure you sign up Friday night or first thing sat morning and point it out. All gaming classes are $4.00 each entry. Stall are $20.00 each no matter if you stay one day or both. Working out of your trailer is $3.00 per horse. There are also 5 jackpots during the gaming day. To enter it is $10.00 each and it is a 90% payback. On July 27th is the performance/halter/breeder classes. Rules are Western Saddle Club Associations and Morgan Rules. Judge is Tamara Jacobsen, Judges decision is FINAL . There are 64 classes this day and there are many high point trophies. Morgan, Sr, Jr, Yth, 4-H, & Show horse. There is also a Justin Morgan Standard Award. All Halter/Showmanship classes are $3.00 each and all performance classes are $4.00 each. There is also a suckling Morgan sweepstakes class cost is $25.00 each foal. This is a 90% pay back classes as well. And there is a Sweepstakes Costume Class and the cost is $10.00 to enter with a 90% payback. Each division has a Championship class such as Halter Jr. horse, Halter Sr. Horse, Supreme Halter horse, Western Pleasure Champion, Driving Champion & English Champion. Yes folks!! those who like to drive there are DRIVING CLASSES open to all breeds. ------------- SCHOLARSHIP: MORGAN DRESSAGE SCHOLARSHIPS AVAILABLE For the second year Morgan dressage enthusiasts can take advantage of eight $500. scholarships to be awarded by the Morgan Dressage Association. Recipients may use their awards for lessons, clinics, symposiums, or other educational endeavors. Applicants must be MDA members and must be competing in dressage on a registered Morgan horse. Scholarships are available for serious training/first level riders as well as those competing in the more advanced levels. The application deadline is Oct. 15, 2003. Last year's scholarship recipients featured riders competing in Training through FEI levels and included Sally Anderson of Spokane, WA, who rides Iron Forge Starman; Annette Bakic of Binghamton, NY with Fortress Initial; Meg Drew of Black Forest, CO with Creation's Grand Finalee; Johanna Hugo of New Egypt, NJ with Wintop's Allen; Barbara Richardson-Lewis of Winsboro, TX with Rogue Hill Galaxy; Nancy Rebman of Ashland, OH with Magenta Sensational Topic; Beth Sheller of Franklin, TN with Caduceus Quintanna; and Jamie Smith of Bellville, OH, who rides Moss Rose Opening Verse. The scholarship program is funded from the proceeds of a stallion service auction held by the MDA every January. Services to beautiful and talented Morgan stallions have been donated by their generous owners; the association offers the services at one-half the advertised fees. The services of the following stallions will provide funding for the 2003 scholarship program:
The Morgan Dressage Association, a National Service Organization of the American Morgan Horse Association, supports the needs of horsemen and women who are training, competing, breeding and promoting Morgans in dressage. Morgans are increasingly being seen as wonderful dressage mounts, especially suited by temperament, size and athleticism for juniors and serious amateur competitors. Among other activities, MDA publishes an annual membership directory, recognizes excellence through year-end and open competition high- score awards, produces educational articles geared to helping dressage riders with their Morgans in the sport, generates favorable publicity about Morgan dressage mounts, sponsors educational activities around the United States, produces a quarterly newsletter and sponsors an e-mail discussion list.
